| The 66th IUCN Council meeting has admitted 27 new members to the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The new members include government agencies, international and national NGOs and affiliate members. In addition, Council recognized the IUCN National Committee of Guinea-Bissau. |

| IUCN Councillors will discuss the theme of the World Conservation Congress |

During the 66th Meeting of the IUCN Council (6th – 8th Nov 2006), Councillors will discuss a variety of interesting issues, such as the themes, aims, objectives and outcomes of the World Conservation Congress to be held in Barcelona in 2008. The two regional directors in Latin America will present the IUCN Strategy in Meso and South America. IUCN Councillors will also discuss IUCN’s role in helping respond to environmental and human consequences of destructive conflicts with specific reference to the Lebanon, Palestine, Somalia and South Asia.
The Membership Committee will be considering 28 applications for IUCN membership. The Programme and Policy Committee will discuss the Report on implementation of the IUCN Programme during 2006, the update on implementation of IUCN Resolutions and the Future of Sustainability Initiative. Other issues to be discussed and recommended for approval to Council include: GMO Action Plan, IUCN Workplan for 2007-2008, IUCN Evaluations, Gender and Biodiversity Task Force.
The Finance and Audit Committee will review the overall financial situation, 2007 budget approval and indicative framework for 2008 and the IUCN Fundraising Strategy. The Governance Task Force will present its report on a variety of IUCN governance issues. The Councillors will decide on a progress report on preparations of the World Conservation Congress.
