A growing Union: 25 new members join World Conservation Union
September 28, 2005
The 64th IUCN Council meeting has admitted 25 new members to the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The new members, originating from almost all regions, include the Government Agency for the Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic, the Association of Retired Persons of the Department of Environment from Iran and The Trust for Sustainable Livelihoods from Trinidad and Tobago. Council was particularly pleased to welcome back into the fold the prestigious National Geographic Society (USA) as well as one of the strongest NGOs in Argentina, Fundacion Vida Silvestre. The new members include government agencies, international and national NGOs.
“With our new member in Trinidad and Tobago we now have a presence in that country – we didn’t have a member there before,” said Ursula Hiltbrunner, Head of IUCN’s Membership Relations and Governance Unit. “The increase in membership shows the confidence of the conservation community in the work of the Union.”
With these additions, the total number of IUCN members has increased to 1,096, including 82 State members, 112 Government Agency members, 785 National NGOs, 84 International NGOs and 33 Affiliate members.
The Council also recognized five IUCN national committees and one regional committee. Through the new committees, the Union will further strengthen its presence and work in Mozambique, Denmark, Turkey, Nicaragua and Chile, and in the South American region.
