Criteria for Selection

Eligible journalists:

Journalists in print and online newspapers are eligible to apply for the Awards. They must be currently practising journalism as their main, though not necessarily sole, activity.

Employees of IUCN and Reuters are not eligible for the awards. 

Deadlines:

Candidates may submit only one entry that has been published or posted between September 12, 2006 and June 10, 2008. The deadline for submission is June 15, 2008.

Themes:

The article needs to focus on an environmental issue, preferably relating nature to human well-being.

  • Restoration of nature or ecosystems
  • Environmental degradation and sound ecosystem management 
  • The conservation and sustainable use of natural resources 
  • Access to benefits from natural resources 
  • Community empowerment and participation related to environment 
  • Environmental impacts of investment, consumption and trade 
  • Environment-related social, economic and development issues 
  • Threatened species and the conservation of biological diversity 
  • Alien invasive species

Selection criteria:

Entries will be evaluated on their potential to capture the interest of a wide readership, and, especially, appeal to policy and decision makers. The six regional juries and the global jury will score entries on the following criteria:

  • Originality of the subject
  • Quality of the investigation/research 
  • Quality of treatment 
  • Ability to relate conservation to mainstream and socio-economic issues 
  • Potential impact on the public and policymakers 
  • Special consideration will be given to any difficulty affecting the journalists’ work

Regional articles will be judged in IUCN official languages: English, French, or Spanish.

Selection Process

Regional selection process

In each of the six nominated regions a regional jury, comprising environmental and media experts, will select a regional winner. The respective IUCN regional office will review articles for eligibility and select the top five of the regional entries. Eligibility for entering one of the six regional competitions should be based on the author’s region of residence.
Regional awards will be granted for:

  1. Asia and the Middle East
  2. English-speaking Africa 
  3. French-speaking Africa 
  4. Europe - West, East and Central Europe 
  5. Latin America and Spanish speaking Caribbean 
  6. North America, Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Pacific Islands) and the English-speaking Caribbean

Global selection process

An international Master Jury will select the global winner amongst the six regional winners. Please be aware that all regional winning articles will be submitted to the Master Jury in English.

The global and the six regional Reuters-IUCN Media Awards 2008 will be presented at the global awards ceremony to be held at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain in October 2008.
