Taller sobre género y políticas energéticas marca camino en Centroamérica

Cada día millones de centroamericanos, en su mayoría mujeres, pasan su día recogiendo leña para calentarse y cocinar, esto reduce ostensiblemente su posibilidad de emplear tiempo para educarse, recrearse y generar alternativas para procurar ingresos para sus hogares y reducir las brechas de pobreza. Este es solo un ejemplo de las múltiples dificultades asociadas al acceso a la energía y la inequidad de género.

Signs of progress on women’s role in tackling climate change

To mark International Women’s Day, IUCN is celebrating the progress made in recognising the role of women in national and regional climate change agendas. Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment is considering a training school for women to take a greater role in emissions-reducing public transport. Tanzania’s Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children has created guidelines for empowering women in climate change initiatives. And the ministerial environmental council of the League of Arab States has put gender equality on its agenda.

Gender and climate change policies

Women’s empowerment and gender sensitive policies can help countries better cope with climate change impacts. Until recently gender issues have not been considered in climate change strategies and initiatives. However, after several years of advocacy, capacity building, and awareness raising, governments have agreed that gender equality is key to achieving climate change goals.

Energy is essential to nearly all aspects of our lives but it means different things to different people. In the developed world energy can mean petrol to run cars, electricity for lights and computers. In the developing world, it can mean survival: being able to boil water to avoid disease. Millions of people, mostly women and children, spend many hours a day collecting fuel for heating and cooking.

 The International Women’s Earth and Climate Initiative is happy to announce the Official Launch of theIWECI Online Solutions Forum.
Although this forum will be open for years to come, all entries posted between 8th March (International Women’s Day) and June 30, 2013, will have a unique opportunity to be compiled into a report to be presented to the 100 women leaders at the IWECI Summit in September 2013.

Doha Conference propels advances in gender balance

doha 2012 logo The 18th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, carried out in Doha Qatar in November 2012, took intoaccount several considerations to bring a greater gender balance to support action on mitigation and adaptation in the Climate Change global discussions.

Since 1984 throughout various decision-making bodies (Members Assemblies and World Conservation Congresses) the incorporation of women and gender considerations have been given high priority.
In 1998 IUCN approved a Gender Policy in which one of the elements was the creation of a Global Senior Gender Adviser Office.
