Women have a profound knowledge of their environment: worldwide millions of women have traditional responsibilities as food growers, water and fuel gatherers, and care-givers. This means they depend on natural resources in their daily lives and are more likely to be affected by environmental hardships. For these reasons and more, making sure that women have a greater say in decisions is critical to the success of environmental policy and programmes from the community level right up to the highest levels of international law.
