Biodiversity monitoring in China

Co-hosted by the Bureau of Science & Technology for Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Biodiversity Committee (BC), CAS, the 2nd National Symposium on Biodiversity Monitoring was successfully held on 13 October, 2016 in Beijing, China. More than 280 participants including five from Taiwan attended this meeting. Mr. Keping MA, Secretary General of BC-CAS, chaired the meeting. Mr. Ziyuan Duan, Deputy Director General of Bureau of Science & Technology for Development, CAS, and Dr. Lei Cai, Division Chief of Department of Nature and Ecology Conservation, Ministry of Environment Protection (MEP) delivered the opening addresses.

Two presentations were given by Prof. Yingxiong Qiu from Zhejiang University and Dr. Akihiro Nakamura from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, CAS. During the five parallel sessions, 34 researchers shared their progresses in diversity monitoring of plants, animals, soil microorganisms, advanced monitoring technology, information management and so on.

This symposium comprehensively summarized the progresses and future plans of biodiversity monitoring, and provided valuable references for the design and implementation of monitoring programs in China. It is important for biodiversity monitoring to collect various forces and strengthen the cooperation between related departments and CAS in China.
