IUCN Director General on board for socially-responsible business

Chaired by the Secretary-General, the UN Global Compact Board was created in 2006 to provide strategic and policy advice for the Global Compact initiative. The initiative sets 10 universally-accepted principles for business in the fields of human rights, employment, environment and anti-corruption. By putting these principles into practice, the business sector - the primary driver of globalization - can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies around the world.

“Conserving biodiversity is one of the world’s biggest challenges,” says Julia Marton-Lefèvre. “The private sector is both an important driver of change and an integral part of solutions to these challenges. I am honoured to be selected to serve on the Board of the United Nations Global Compact and look forward to engaging with committed business and civil society partners towards realizing IUCN’s vision of a just world that values and conserves nature.”

The UN Secretary General also appointed five other new members of the Board, which is the UN’s highest-ranking advisory body involving business and civil society. It now has 22 members representing business, civil society, employment and the United Nations. Board members promote Global Compact’s mission, acting in a personal, honorary and unpaid capacity.
