IUCN Juniper Project Ziarat in collaboration with Rahbar School Green Club organized cleanup campaign on “World Nature Conservation (WNC) Day”

July 28 is commemorated as World Nature Conservation (WNC) Day to accentuate that healthy environments are the basis for ensuring and securing the well-being of present and future generations.

IUCN in collaboration with Rahbar School Green Club and teachers of the Rahbar School Ziarat organized a cleanup campaign for Khandi Sar picnic point.

District Ziarat is endowed with nature’s gift of juniper ecosystem that supports a diverse set of biodiversity including the Suleiman Markhor and many plant species that have medicinal value.  It also provides opportunities for recreation being a famous tourist place. It is estimated that about 150000 tourists visit Ziarat during summers. While the visitors enjoy the beauty and pleasant weather many of them leave their litter in the form of plastic bags and bottles behind. In the absence of proper waste management, several picnic points have been polluted.

Mr. Inam Ullah Khan Project Manager Juniper briefed the student regarding importance of clean environment and the goods and services the juniper ecosystem provided. He said that to maintain a counterpoise in the natural world, we must also help various species to continue to exist which in turn help in our survival. He also briefed the students on types of wastes based on their ability to degrade. He explained the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Mr. Abdul Khalil Khan Community Development Officer briefed regarding the programme of the day and shared about different types of wastes were to be collected separately. He shared that natural ecosystems are facing great threats from unwise use and the challenge is how to conserve nature in the process of achieving sustainable development for the cleanup, bags were provided to the students, waste material was collected and segregated on the basis of their potential to decompose or reuse. The collected waste was then disposed of at the specified land fill site.

At the end of the campaign the students shared their reflections. Mr. Maqbool Ahmad president Rahbar Green Club shared his views and appreciated Juniper Projects interventions and said that such motivating activities would help conserve nature from which we all benefit.
