Talks to evaluate progress in halting the loss of nature will take place 8-19 October in Hyderabad, India at the 11th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP11). Governments meeting in Hyderabad will discuss progress towards the implementation of decisions taken at the Nagoya Biodiversity Summit in 2010, including the 2020 Aichi Targets to save and restore nature. IUCN urges governments to turn their commitments into action and invest in nature to achieve broader development goals, such as food security and stable economies. …

Freshwater species in Indo-Burma region under threat
An assessment of 2,515 described freshwater species in the Indo-Burma region by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and partners has revealed that 13% of these species are threatened with extinction. The report comes at a time when large scale hydrological development is underway, or is proposed, throughout this region which is known for its exceptionally high diversity of freshwater species. …

Latest IUCN Red List assessment finds parrotfish and surgeonfish facing heightened risk of localized extinction
A recent study conducted for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ found that 86% of the populations of parrotfish and surgeonfish face a low risk of extinction globally, but they do face a heightened risk of extinction regionally—especially in areas like the Coral Triangle.
