The 6th Regional Conservation Forum is to take place in Iran in May 2007
27 December 2006 | News story
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in November between IUCN WESCANA Regional Office and its state member in Iran, Department of Environment (DOE) to hold The 6th Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) in Tehran during the period of May 22-25, 2007. This forum will provide a platform for all the experts, NGOs and governments in the region to participate and exchange knowledge to provide a secure living for a just and healthy environment in line with IUCN's vision. The forum theme is Community-Centered Conservation: Linking Local and Global Knowledge.
The RCF aims at providing the members and partners of IUCN, as well as the wider conservation community, with an opportunity to prepare for an effective regional participation in the Barcelona World Conservation Congress which will be held during Oct. 5-14, 2007, and to strengthen knowledge and networking for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the region. More specifically, the RCF will enable a substantive debate and exchange of learning on issues of sustainable development focusing in particular on ‘Community Centred Conservation: Linking Local & Global Knowledge’. It will provide IUCN members and stakeholders an update on the IUCN WESCANA Programme 2005-2008 and assist them in considering draft motions they might wish to propose to the Barcelona Congress.
An extensive debate will be devoted during the forum on issues of community based conservation that are of particular importance to the region. The debate will be structured around conservation-centred development along with other critical issues in the region, mainly environmental security and human well-being, nature-based tourism and sustainable development, poverty alleviation and local actions, business and biodiversity.
Professionals and experts in those issues from across the region will be invited to participate in the forum. The event will feature plenary sessions, group discussions and exhibitions.
