Meeting of the IUCN Pakistan National Committee Members in Islamabad

News Story: Islamabad The first meeting of the year 2011 of the IUCN Pakistan National Committee Members held on January 19, 2011 at Islamabad Hotel in Islamabad. Mr. Javed Jabbar, IUCN Vice President and the Regional Councillor chaired the meeting.
The participation of the newly joined member Mr. Miran Jan Kakar, Secretary, Planning and Development Department of Government of Balochistan was warmly welcomed by the members of IUCN Pakistan National Committee (PNC). Mr. Jabbar welcomed Mr. Kakar and remarked that with addition of the Planning and Development, now in essence, it can be said that the IUCN Pakistan National Committee has representation from all four provinces of the country, FATA and Gilgit Baltistan. Mr. Miran Jan Kakar commended the role of IUCN for the protection of environment in the Balochistan Province and the usefulness and effectiveness of the Balochistan Conservation Strategy. He also expressed the desire that with the help of IUCN they are looking forward to make the Balochistan Province a role model for others to emulate in the future in terms of environmental protection and ambience.
The PNC Members highly appreciated the environmental guidelines titled: Integrating Environmental Safeguards into Flood Relief, Response and Recovery developed by Asia Regional Office for the flood relief staff that were translated into local languages i.e. Urdu, Sindhi and Pashtu. Mr. Shah Murad Aliani, Country Representative IUCN Pakistan proposed the idea for capacity building of the persons engaged in the rehabilitation process after the Pakistan floods.
Mr. Javed Jabbar also briefed the members about the decisions taken by the 75th Meeting of the IUCN Council held in Geneva in November 2010. The points discussed among others in the PNC meeting included: rehabilitation of the flood affected persons and areas, activities of the Commission on Education and Communication taking place in Pakistan and the activities pertaining to the International Year of the Forest during the year 2011.
