Field Trip to Formulate Projects in Kien Giang
03 December 2008 | News story
Four experts from IUCN Viet Nam, Holcim Viet Nam Limited (HVL) and the Institute of Tropical Biology (ITB) are embarking on a tour of the province that houses some of the cement producer’s main national quarrying sites to settle the terms of a conservation collaboration planned between the two organisations.
The representatives will travel December 1 – 6 to Kien Luong District,
Among other goals, the aim of the agreement is to incorporate environmental and biodiversity conservation into the province’s social economic plan and pilot sustainable management projects there.
Following the field trip, participants will develop projects to mitigate the environmental impacts of cement production. Initiatives are expected to include biodiversity monitoring, wetlands rehabilitation and habitat enrichment in Kien Luong, a biodiversity hot spot inhabited by a number of endangered species. Other projects will promote sustainable eco-tourism, and conduct environmental awareness raising and capacity building for HVL staff, local government officials and the community.
The projects are part of a five-year partnership between IUCN and Holcim Viet
The field trip comes on the heels of a training needs assessment held at all Holcim sites in November to gauge the environmental awareness level of HVL employees, for use in designing training activities for them.
In addition to establishing that baseline, the assessment mission confirmed the support of local authorities for the plan to build the environmental capacity of HVL staff and to raise community awareness on environmental issues. It also allowed IUCN and Holcim to define the priorities, approach and scale of planned activities with local governments and to identify a focal person in each locality where trainings will be held.
IUCN intends to organise the forthcoming capacity building and awareness activities by topic, and hold three to four trainings per year.
