Action needed against species extinction

IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species™ shows that the extinction crisis continues unabated. Targets to reduce the loss of biodiversity by 2010 look set to have fallen far short of what had been hoped for. Craig Hilton-Taylor, manager of the IUCN Red List Unit in Cambridge, England, says he hopes the International Year of Biodiversity will turn this situation around. …

Birds of prey which have always lived in captivity often don't have the opportunity or skills to fly. Jacques-Olivier Travers, from the bird of prey centre Les Aigles du Leman, in Haute Savoie in France, teaches birds at the centre how to use their wings and gain their freedom in the skies. When they're ready, he flies with them on a paraglider over the mountains of France, showing an extraordinary bond between man and beast. IUCN Director General speaks of her hopes for the International Year of Biodiversity

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. It's an opportunity to find real solutions to safeguard the natural environment which mankind depends upon.
