One in ten natural World Heritage Sites in Danger
UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee’s annual meeting, which starts in St Petersburg on Sunday, will see a total of 36 new sites considered for inscription as natural and cultural sites, and a series of monitoring reports on the sites already listed. But if IUCN’s recommendations to add four World Heritage sites to the Danger List are accepted, 21 out of the 211 –one in ten- natural World Heritage Sites will be officially “in danger.” … | French | Russian

New mangrove finch fledglings
During the last breeding season of the Galapagos Islands' mangrove finch, the SOS project team identified at least 13 fledged nests out of which have emerged around 19 juveniles. This is a real boost for the population which is thought to number only around 100 individuals. The SOS-funded project aims to protect the Critically Endangered Mangrove Finch (Camarhynchus heliobates) by extending the bird's natural range and protecting its habitat, the mangrove forests. …

Save Our Species funds Mangrove Finch project on Galapagos Islands
Swen Lorenz, Chief Executive of the Charles Darwin Foundation, an IUCN member organization, visited IUCN HQs in order to sign a grant agreement with SOS - Save Our Species to protect the Mangrove Finch (Camarhynchus heliobates) which is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Mangrove Finch is the rarest of the 13 species of Darwin Finches with an estimated remaining population of 100 individuals found only in two locations on the Galapagos Islands. …

World Firsts on Henderson Island
The Royal Society for Protection of Birds (RSPB), an IUCN Member, and the Pitcairn Islands Government have announced that the ground-breaking rat eradication operation to restore Henderson Island, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in the South Pacific, has been successfully implemented. The final result as to whether all rats have been successfully removed will be known in 2013. …
