IUCN and TRAFFIC release CITES CoP15 Analyses of the Proposals

In preparation for the upcoming CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna) meeting (15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, CoP15) that will be taking place 13 – 25 March 2010 in Doha, Qatar, IUCN and TRAFFIC have released the results of their Analyses of the Proposals to Amend the Appendices. Complementary tools for RBA to conservation

At the XIII World Forestry Congress held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the IUCN Environmental Law Centre (ELC) hosted a side event to present complementary tools for Rights-based Approaches (RBA) to conservation which have been developed in collaboration with IUCN partners. As a highlight of the event, the new RBA to conservation portal was launched. Developed by the ELC, the RBA portal is intended to serve as a central point for collecting relevant information on RBA to conservation and sharing it with the larger IUCN community. Writing the rule book on REDD

Since 2007, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) has become a major focus in negotiations over renewed commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC). An effective REDD mechanism may enable developing countries to merge the goals of national forest protection with sustainable development, while providing a potentially effective and efficient climate change mitigation option to help combat climate change. For successful REDD regimes, national governments must have effective national legal frameworks to ensure that forests remain intact and standing on a permanent basis.
