Grant recipients of Phase 2 (Round 1) of MFF Small Grants Facility (SGF) met on 9 – 10 July at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7 to share their lessons learnt over the past 12 months. Phase 2 (Round 1) which commenced operation in January 2011 concluded in June 2012.

During this period, 22 projects were implemented in five coastal priority areas in Sri Lanka; Mannar, Kokilai Nayaru, Batticaloa, Panama- Pottuvil and Puttalam lagoon by 19 Grantees.

Eighteen grantees participated the workshop which was also attended by the Programme Manager, MFF Secretariat and a member of the National Steering Committee.

The main lessons revealed that the success of a project is directly related to the commitment of the leadership and while US $ 5,000 proved to be adequate to  successfully complete community level tasks, it was not so for scientific research activities which lead to knowledge generation. Aquaculture projects generally require more than 12 months to see tangible benefits and projects with effective exit mechanisms showed signs of sustainability beyond the project period.
