Seminar on World Water Day-2012 "Water and Food Security” at the Department of Botany, University of Karachi

Each year, World Water Day highlights various aspects of Water Conservation. It is an international day, celebrated to create awareness about rapidly depleting resource and was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22nd, 1993 as the first World Water Day.
This year’s theme for World Water Day was "Water and Food Security". In collaboration with the University of Karachi, IUCN under its MFF Programme organised a seminar at the Auditorium of Botany Department, University of Karachi.
The event commenced with the welcome address by Dr. Muhammad Javed Zaki, Chairman Botany Department, University of Karachi who gave an overview of the water crises in the world and its relevance to the academicians and researchers.
The key note speaker at the occasion was Mr. Rafiul Haq (National Coordinator, MFF Pakistan) who gave a detailed presentation on water and food security in Pakistan. He mentioned the importance of the e-flow (environmental flow) in ensuring food security. He emphasised on the contribution of marine water in food chain for human consumption and asserted on improving the water quality for a more secure and sustained food supply. He also suggested several practical ways to conserve water.
Mr. Shehzad Sadiq, from IUCN Pakistan Coastal Programme, highlighted the need to commemorate the WWD and focused on its history and the importance. He emphasised on the loss of freshwater due to inappropriate use of the resources. He mentioned that due to global warming, climate change and population pressure, fresh water availability is decreasing day by day.
At the closing of the seminar , participants were requested to put their signature on the banner, to endorse their commitment for supporting efforts to conserve water.
