The European Red List grows: bees and medicinal plants to be assessed by IUCN

In the next three years, IUCN will assess the status of two species groups which are fundamental to our well-being: pollinators and medicinal plants. These species play an essential role in delivering key ecosystem services and supporting livelihoods.

Bees are the major pollinators of wild plants and mass-flowering crops in terrestrial ecosystems and it is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees. The importance of bees to human survival and the maintenance of much of terrestrial biodiversity can only increase over the coming years, given the projections for human population growth and the corresponding increasing conversion of landscapes to agricultural use. Sadly there is strong evidence that they are in decline mainly due to human-related causes so their decrease or loss may have a significant economic impact in Europe.

Plants have been used as sources of medicine from ancient times to the present day by all cultures. The use of traditional medicine is widespread in many countries, and the use of complementary and alternative medicine has increased substantially over the last few decades. However, many once abundant medicinal plant populations are depleted and thousands of species are likely threatened worldwide.

IUCN, supported by the European Commission, will develop the European Red List of pollinators and medicinal plants. Assessing these species groups will contribute to increase the coverage of invertebrates and plants in the European Red List and will add an interesting dimension through the linking of the status of these species to the state of key ecosystem services. We need to know more about the actual status of such important species as their decline could have consequences to our economies and life.

Scientists at the University of Sfeffield in England were able to track the arrival and spread of the varroa mite, VARROA DESTRUCTOR, on Oahu island in Hawaii. Within ayear of the blood-sucking mite's arrival in 2007, 65% of the 419 bee colonies on Oahu were wiped out, according to the research, published in the JOURNAL SCIENCE. The Sheffield scientists said the mites spread a devastating ailment called DEFORMED WINGS VIRUS (DWV), which rapidly spread through bee colonies, killing nearly all the bees.
Other factors also may be playing a role in the COLLAPSE OF BEE COLONIES - NEONICOTINOIDS.

Solute molecules remain in closed compartment by using
2 membranes one (inferior) permiting water molecules
to raise, another memb.(superior) permiting the water
molecules to leave the compartment at the raised level
thus having an energy ={heigt(level to which molecules
raised)*weight of molecules*gravity(9.8)}
source of this energy is water's temperature inturn
atmosphere's temperature
We should remember this is first step just proving
that there is such source because the energy produced
is little comparing the size .
Could you kindly help me to practice my idea?

new scientific idea
I have a scientific idea, according it we can
produce energy from the kinetic energy of air molecule
which is endless safe source.
At the begining (first step) we should prove that we
can take energy from mentioned source, as following:
by using semipermeable membrane (e.g. Cellophane) to
raise water molecules then using another
membrane(cellophane) at the raised level to act as
afilter to the solute (e.g. sucrose) molecules i.e.

scientific researches have halfe solution only.
scientific researches need to be supported and applied, ihad worked on the same case in Egypt, but it wasnot exploited, its really an important case. to be an attempt to conservation of biodiversity which is endangered by really threats. we need a solutions involve human impacts and governments actions.
