IUCN is delighted to announce not only a new member of staff to the Washington DC office, but also a new position. Thomas Laughlin joins IUCN as the recently appointed Deputy Head of the Global Marine Program.

Laughlin comes to IUCN from one of IUCN’s government agency members and key partners, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As the Former Deputy Director Office of International Affairs, Tom will bring a wealth of experience as an international negotiator to the Union’s marine program as well as IUCN as a whole.

Tom spent 28 years with NOAA as a U.S. government spokesman dealing with a wide range of marine topics, including land based sources of marine pollution, regional seas, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) marine conservation and polar issues. He has served as chair for a number of working groups including a number of associated UNEP processes and the Arctic Council.

“A true visionary and leader in his field, Tom has played a crucial role in the development of integrated ecosystem-based ocean management initiatives and we are extremely pleased that he is joining the Global Marine Program,” exclaims, Carl Gustaf Lundin, Head of IUCN’s Global Marine Program.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Tom throughout my professional career,” reveals US Executive Director, Scott Hajost. “Needless to say he is a tremendous addition, not just to the marine team but to the US office and IUCN as a whole.”

“I am thrilled to be part of such a prestigious international organization,” says Laughlin. “I look forward to working with members and program staff to promote and restore the health and sustainability of the world’s oceans.”

Tom Laughlin holds a B.A. in political science from Yale University and an M.A. in political science from Northwestern University.

Laughlin will be joined by Dorothée Herr who will be assisting him on global marine issues. Dorothée is originally from Luxembourg and first came to IUCN US as a Research Fellow in October 2008.
