CEC presents Nature-Based Solution and #NatureForAll at Asia Society Annual Conference

Upon invitation from East-West Center (EWC), CEC Steering Committee members, Nancy Colleton and Hanying Li, participated in“Taking Nature into Account: Can Valuing Nature and Conservation Promote Sustainable Models of Development in Asia?” a panel at the Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference, held in Washington DC, March 23-25, 2018

The Panel aimed to facilitate discussions about environmental issues and sustainable development challenges in Asia, a region where economic development is rapidly advancing and the need to consider nature in development scenarios is a great challenge.  This is one of the first efforts to include environmental and sustainable development discussions in the AAS annual meeting program. 

Moderatored by Namji Steinemann Associate Director of the EWC Education Program,  Hanying introduced current and emerging challenges as well as opportunities of sustainable development in China.  Colonel Saranyu Viriyavejakul, Vice President, Neighboring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA), discussed their work with seven countries to cooperate in areas of development but also trianing and technical assistance.   Nancy Colleton shared how Earth observations are used to understand the impacts of human activity on the environment and in what ways they can be used for newly-emerging ecosystem services.

Nancy and Hanying also shared IUCN’s Nature-based Solutions and its application in Asia with regard to rehabilitating natural systems and incorporating nature-based approaches with conventional infrastructure development and planning contribute to economic development.

During interaction with audience, both Nancy and Hanying elaborated the importance of education and outreach, shared #NatureForAll campaign, and emphasized awareness must lead to action.

The Panel was supported by AAS Committee on Teaching About Asia (CTA) and organized by East-West Center in collaboration with Asia Society.
