Marine World Heritage: Protecting the ‘best of the best’ in the ocean

World Heritage – the very words evoke the global nature of the mission to protect the highest quality and most iconic natural and cultural sites for future generations. There is, however, a major aspect of the implementation of the World Heritage Convention that needs significant strengthening. By far the biggest gap in recognition and coverage by the Convention concerns the ocean. With the international agenda becoming ‘greener’ every year, there is a tendency to forget that without the ‘blue’ there simply would not be any green.
