IUCN Regional Office for South America implements the project in co-operation with IUCN Regional Office for Mesoamerica. Through its convening capacity, IUCN promotes discussion among governments and civil society on socio-environmental issues. The results are important inputs for documents to be presented in national, regional and international meetings.
Although numerous experiences on conservation and social equity exist in Latin America, they are generally not widely communicated. NGOs, government agencies and academics usually debate critical issues in different spaces and not necessarily share their knowledge, concerns and future directions. There is a need to exchange information, discuss the experiences regarding different socio-environmental issues, and build collaboration among NGOs, governments and other stakeholders.
Its main goal is to promote social equity principles in natural resources management, contributing to strengthen regional environmental governance. Through the Clearinghouse on Conservation and Social Equity, IUCN provides Latin America´s development community with an important tool for:
- Disseminating regional information about publications and documents related to participatory management, community involvement, land tenure, indigenous peoples, water management, gender, genetic resources, etc.
- Presenting in depth analysis on critical issues for the region through an electronic magazine called SIMPOSIUM
- Providing the social and environmental community with a low cost discussion platform through the mechanisms of electronic fora
Results:
- On-line clearinghouse on conservation and social equity with an average of 3000 visits per month, available in spanish and in portuguese.
- Annual regional fora discussing the relationship between conservation and social equity
- Electronic magazines containing in depth analysis on critical socio-environmental issues for the region have been uploaded
- Different documents regarding conservation and social equity issues have been produced
- The Brazilian community can access and feed the clearinghouse as well as the magazines and the fora
