24 new members join World Conservation Union

The 65th IUCN Council meeting has admitted 24 new members to the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The new members include government agencies and international and national NGOs. In addition, Council recognized the IUCN National Committees of Jordan and Paraguay and the IUCN Subregional Committee of Central Africa.
The new members, originating from a wide range of regions, include the government agencies Centrum för biologisk mångfald from Sweden and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation Sdn Bhd from Malaysia , as well as IUCN’s first members from Montenegro and Togo : the Zeleni Crne Gore (The Greens of Montenegro) and Les Amis de la Terre-Togo (ADT-TOGO). Council was particularly pleased to welcome back into the fold Pronatura A.C. from Mexico and Birdlife Netherlands.
Through the recognition of three new IUCN national committees, the Union will further strengthen its presence and work in Paraguay , Jordan , and in the Central African region.
“The ever-growing interest in IUCN membership shows the relevance and credibility of the Union ’s work in the conservation community,” said Ursula Hiltbrunner, Head of IUCN’s Membership Relations and Governance Unit.
With these additions, the total number of IUCN members stands at 1,019; including 81 State members, 109 Government Agency members, 717 National NGOs, 82 International NGOs and 30 Affiliate members.
