Conservation Commons at the CBD

28 March 2006

Open access to biodiversity data and information is a fundamental pre-condition to successful conservation efforts on the ground – as well as in guiding decision making about how to direct scarce resources for these efforts. On March 22, a joint statement endorsed by 28 conservation and scientific organizations was tabled to the 8th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity – taking place in Curitiba, Brazil. The statement urges Parties to ensure that biodiversity data and information from publicly funded research be made freely and openly available to everyone. It was drafted through the work of the Conservation Commons.

Launched in November of 2004 at the World Conservation Congress, the Conservation Commons is a global partnership of conservation, scientific, and private sector organizations committed to working together to ensure, wherever possible, open access to biodiversity data and information. Founded on a common set of Principles, Conservation Commons partners are committed to breaking down barriers to access – defined scientifically, technically, legally, and culturally – to improve the impact of conservation on the ground and help ensure achievement of the 2010 Target on Biodiversity.
