The World Conservation Union and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGCS) launch a new water programme for the West/Central Asia and North Africa (WESCANA) region today. The three-year programme, aimed at assisting the region to adopt a systemic approach to freshwater management, will be administered by the Union’s WESCANA regional office and is funded by the Italian Government during the first year.
“Italy and the World Conservation Union have built an efficient and solid strategic partnership since the early nineties. This particular initiative benefits of a substantial contribution, approximately 800,000 Euros, from the Italian government. It stands as another tangible demonstration of the importance that Italy attaches to an extensive cooperation with international organizations worldwide and to the water sector”, said HE Gianfranco Giorgolo, Italian Ambassador in Jordan.
“Today we open a new chapter in our longstanding partnership with DGCS. Throughout the past years, DGCS has supported IUCN WESCANA in many conservation projects and activities, and this new partnership will broaden our activities in water management in the whole region,” said Dr Odeh Al Jayyousi, Regional Director of the Union’s WESCANA Regional Office in Amman, Jordan.
The new water programme, entitled ‘Systemic Integration of Sectoral Networks for Sustainable Freshwater Management in West and Central Asia and North Africa’, will cover the period from 2006 to 2008. It is funded by the Italian Government for the first year and aims at integrating the comprehensive development and conservation pursuits of the Union’s WESCANA Regional Office, assisting the countries in the region to adopt a systemic approach to water management at policy, decision-making and field levels, emphasizing the integration among green, blue and brown aspects of water resources management and that of social, economic and ecological processes in target catchments areas and aquifers.
