| Aroha Te Pareake Mead from Polynesia and Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury are the two new additions to the Council of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). They will add two important dimensions of work to the Council: indigenous issues and conservation, which Aroha Te Pareake Mead was appointed for and a field level perspective of the links between poverty alleviation and the environment, which is Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury’s background. |

| Drive for a Central American Policy on Shared Management of Protected Areas |

| In a workshop organized by the World Conservation Union, more than 60 representatives from the seven Central American countries worked to set up a future Central American Policy on Shared Management of Protected Areas this week, aiming at increasing stakeholder participation in the management of protected areas in the region. |

| The World Conservation Union promotes Fair Trade in Jordan |

| Fair Trade Jordan will kick off on 23 September 2005 with over 80 producers showcasing their products at the one-day market place for goods, ideas and shopping at Wild Jordan Nature Center in Jabal Amman. The World Conservation Union’s Regional Office in Jordan is one of the organizers of the event, sponsored by the Enhanced Productivity Program of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. |

| The ban on fisheries at depths greater than 1000 m has now entered into force in the Mediterranean |

| Towed dredges and trawl nets fisheries at depths beyond 1000 m have been banned in the Mediterranean. The 24 countries of the General Fisheries Commissions (GFCM) of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) adopted this recommendation, based on a comprehensive study on deep sea fishing in the Mediterranean developed by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and WWF. |

The publication, entitled “Investing in Environmental Wealth for Poverty Reduction” was prepared by David Pearce of University College London on behalf of the Poverty Environment Partnership, supported by the World Conservation Union. |

| Good news for the conservation of Mount Elgon: On 2 September an agreement was signed between the East African Community Secretariat, the Government of Norway and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) to implement the four-year programme of integrated ecosystem management for Mount Elgon, one of Africa’s largest mountains shared between Kenya and Uganda. |

| Today the IUCN Global Marine Programme started its first online lecture of the recently launched Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) learning project, sponsored by the Global Environment Facility – International Waters: Learn.
