IUCN appoints Director for new Mediterranean Programme
Gland, Switzerland, 25 June, 2001 (IUCN) - Director General Achim Steiner, today announced the appointment of Jamie Skinner as Director of the Mediterranean Coordination Centre in Malaga, Spain.
Skinner, an expert in environment and ecosystems management issues and former Senior Environment Officer at the World Commission on Dams, will direct the programme requested by the 160 Mediterranean IUCN members at the 1994 General Assembly.
The work of the centre, first designed in 1997, will focus on conservation action in the Mediterranean eco-region, which includes all states bordering the Mediterranean Sea, including islands, plus Andorra, Jordan, Portugal and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
On December 5, 2000, IUCN and the Spanish government signed the formal agreement establishing the Mediterranean office in Malaga at the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucia.
Building on its substantial programme in West Asia, North Africa and European regions, IUCN will bring the expertise of its member organizations, comissions and secretariat to the Mediterranean programme.
IUCN - The World Conservation Union was founded in 1948 and brings together 79 states, 112 government agencies, 760 NGOs, 37 affiliates, and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership. Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. Within the framework of global conventions, IUCN has helped over 75 countries to prepare and implement national conservation and biodiversity strategies. IUCN has approximately 1000 staff, most of whom are located in its 42 regional and country offices while 100 work at its Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland.
