IUCN Vietnam Representative Honoured for Service to the Environment
Dr Hans Friederich, IUCN’s country representative in Vietnam, is the first foreigner to be awarded one of the country’s highest environmental honours.
Dr. Friederich was awarded the "Medal for Science and Technology" for service to the environment. The medal has previously only been awarded to Vietnamese scientists who have completed a 30 year career and who have contributed significantly to the field of science, technology or environment.
Dr. Hans Friederich was awarded the medal on 6 May 1999 by the Minister for Science, Technology and Environment, H.E. Chu Tuan Nha.
The proclamation stated that the medal had been awarded "in recognition of the assistance that Hans Friederich had provided during his days as advisor to the Director-General of the National Environment Agency from 1994 to 1996, and for his successful management of the IUCN Programme in Vietnam."
Dr. Friederich is the first IUCN country representative in Vietnam, a post he assumed on 1 January 1997. Accepting the award, Dr. Friederich announced that a new Vietnamese IUCN country representative has been identified by IUCN.
Guests at the ceremony included H.E. Monique Frank, the ambassador of The Kingdom of the Netherlands; Dr. Pham Khoi Nguyen, vice-minister for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment; and former vice-minister and current IUCN councillor Professor Le Quy An.
