Can Protected Areas contribute to Poverty Reduction?
Opportunities and Limitations
Lea M. Scherl, Alison Wilson, Robert Wild, Jill Blockhus, Phil Franks, Jeffrey A. McNeely and Thomas O. McShane

Poverty has become the central concern for development agencies, and because many of the areas that are most important for conserving biodiversity are occupied by poor people, or have poor people living around them, the complex relationship between poverty and protected areas can no longer be ignored.     This book presents a balanced perspective on how protected areas relate to poverty, both positively and negatively. On the one hand, protected areas deliver many benefits to the people living around them, ranging from tourism to pollination. On the other hand, protected areas may prevent some forms of resource use, and harbour animals that may damage crops in adjacent lands. But by carefully addressing these potential conflicts in an open and inclusive manner, protected area authorities can forge a productive partnership with the rural poor. The issues certainly will require further discussion, but this book provides a useful beginning that is built on a broad consensus of leading organisations working in conservation and development.

Conservation on Private Lands
The Australian Experience
Penelope Figgis

Australia's rich and distinct biodiversity is under multiple threats including loss of habitat to human settlement, agriculture and grazing, introduction and spread of alien invasives, pollution, altered fire regimes and landclearing. The landclearing rate of c. 500,000 hectares p.a. is comparable to the worst African, South American and Asian de-forestation rates, much occurring on private lands. This paper gives a brief survey of the ecological and social factors driving the increasing emphasis on private lands in the national biodiversity effort. It also reviews some of the key mechanisms being explored to augment the formal parks system to stem the decline and result in long-term biodiversity gains. With a huge range of programmes and mechanisms being trialed, this paper presents a comprehensive overview.

European Models of Good Practice in Protected Areas
Hugh Synge

This book presents four case studies of European protected areas illustrating particular themes of management practice. The National Park of Abruzzo, Latium and Molise (Italy) serves as a model for zoning; the Bialowieza National Park (Poland) for monitoring; participatory management is exemplified in the Minorca Biosphere Reserve in Spain; and the Austrian Hohe Tauern National Park is a good example for visitor management.

Friends for Life: New partners in support of protected areas
Edited by Jeffrey A. McNeely
Table of Contents

The Vth IUCN World Parks Congress held in 2003 in Durban, South Africa was host to a stream of workshops dedicated to the broad topic of building support for protected areas. As a means of providing a more coherent picture, a separate set of workshops was held on communicating the benefits of protected areas. The collection of papers contained within this publication brings together the experience and wisdom of the leading thinkers and practitioners of protected area planning and management. The editor has successively integrated the disparate and often complex literature and debate around this subject, deducing the “lessons learned” by so many researchers, managers, teachers and local communities.

Management Plans – Concepts and Proposals
Stephan Amend, Aída Giraldo, Juan Oltremari, Ramón Sánchez, Vladimir Valarezo and Yerena Edgard

The conceptualisation of planning instruments for the management of protected areas in Latin America has a relatively long history. Management planning was further developed in the 90s through growing experience in the management of protected areas and, in particular, national parks. This publication (first published in Spanish under the title Planes de Manejo: Conceptos y Propuestas (2002)) is a summary compilation from an extensive base of Latin American works on the reality of protected area management.

Proceedings of the Workshop Stream Building a Secure Financial Future: Finance & Resources
Edited by Carlos E. Quintela, Lee Thomas and Sarah Robin
Table of Contents

This report provides a summary of the Workshop Stream “Building a Secure Financial Future”, part of the Vth IUCN World Parks Congress, held in Durban, South Africa, 8–17 September 2003. These Proceedings provide insight as to how to secure the long-term financial viability of parks and conservation areas. The summary of discussions offers many alternatives for generating revenues, and emphasizes the need to adopt a business approach to management of protected areas. This publication provides us with the foundation for taking the next steps towards achieving sustainable financing of protected areas, and in so doing, to more effectively conserve our natural heritage.

An accompanying CD-Rom contains the full text papers and associated presentations submitted by participants of this Workshop Stream. Also contained is the Conservation Finance Alliance (CFA) Training Guide, which provides detailed descriptions and instructions on how to implement a number of finance mechanisms.

Protected areas in 2023
Scenarios for an uncertain future
Edited by Jeffrey A. McNeely and Frederik Schutyser

As part of the preparations for the Vth World Parks Congress, a high-level team was assembled by IUCN to consider the long-term future of protected areas. They prepared three scenarios – plausible futures, rather than predictions: The Triple Bottom Line, where economic growth, social well-being and environmental sustainability were given equal treatment; the Rainbow, a world where globalization was replaced by regional alliances; and But Your Eden, where economics ruled. All three contain surprises.

Transboundary Conservation
A New Vision for Protected Areas

Russell A. Mittermeier et. al.

Transboundary conservation areas are environmentally endangered regions that sprawl across international borders and contain multiple protected areas. Recent studies estimate that there are now 188 transboundary conservation areas in 112 countries, making up about 17 percent of the designated protected areas around the world. This book specifically examines 28 of these areas, found across all continents, from Asia to Antarctica, and in several oceans. Eminent scientists and conservationists contribute detailed histories of the areas, from the birth of the initial conservation efforts to the latest research that reveals new regions and assesses the success of the programs to protect existing ones. Accompanying the analyses are Conservation International’s trademark vibrant full-colour photographs that powerfully document these rapidly disappearing treasures.

The Urban Imperative
Urban Outreach Strategies for Protected Area Agencies

Edited by Ted Trzyna
Table of Contents

Almost half the world’s people live in cities and this proportion is steadily growing. Protected areas provide important benefits to cities; conversely, conservationists depend on support from voters, leaders, and opinion-shapers largely concentrated in urban centres and their success will depend increasingly on taking these urban connections seriously.
This book examines how those responsible for protected areas can better serve people in large cities and build stronger urban constituencies for nature conservation. Authors from 13 countries discuss the multifaceted interdependence of cities and protected areas; innovative roles for conservation organizations in educating urban people about nature, greening cities, and bridging divisions in urban society; and the partnerships essential to working in urban settings. Case studies focus on cities as diverse as Beijing, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Mumbai and Sydney.

2003 United Nations List of Protected Areas
Compiled by Stuart Chape et. al.

This UN List is the thirteenth produced since 1962 and the first version to attempt a comprehensive presentation of all the world’s known protected areas. The introductory text presents an analysis and the accompanying CD lists more than 102,000 sites covering 18.8 million sq. km. Significant progress has been made in conserving representative areas of the world’s terrestrial biomes, although some, including Lake Systems and Temperate Grasslands, remain under-represented. It is an essential reference document for all who want to understand the progress made in responding to the challenges of biodiversity loss and other environmental threats around the world.
