Cycads
Edited by John Donaldson
Table
of Contents
Cycads were a dominant part of the
earth's flora during the age of the dinosaurs
and many species were common even in more recent
times. However, many of the 297 species and sub-species
dealt with in this Action Plan are threatened
by habitat destruction and plant collecting, and
more than half the known species are now classified
as threatened. This publication is meant to be
aworking document, and provides an overview of
all the cycads and the threats to their survival,
as well as a set of objectives and actions to
reduce these threats.

DNA
and Tissue Banking for Biodiversity and Conservation:
Theory, Practice and Uses
Edited by Vincent Savolainen, Martyn
P. Powell, Kate Davis, Gail Reeves and Angélique
Corthals
Table
of contents
The world is facing a biodiversity crisis of
unprecedented magnitude. Unless there are radical
changes in human behaviour, we can expect significant
and alarming species loss in the near future.
DNA and tissue banks have great potential as tools
for biodiversity conservation, yet few have been
established. Arising from a collaborative project
on DNA banking, phylogeny and conservation of
the South African flora, this publication provides
the practical and legislative framework necessary
to establish more DNA banks and is essential reading
for anyone wishing to understand the application
of genetic technologies to conservation.

The
Top 50 Mediterranean Island Plants
Wild plants at the
brink of extinction, and what is needed to save
them
Edited by Bertrand de Montmollin and Wendy
Strahm
Table
of Contents
The flora of the Mediterranean Islands includes
many rare and localized species unique to the

sheets of species which are especially threatened,
based on the IUCN Red List criteria. Each sheet
comprises a description of the species with illustrations
and maps and outlines the threats, existing conservation
measures and additional measures needed for their
conservation. Aimed at the layman, the text is
easily accessible to the non-botanist.
