1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants
Edited by Kerry S. Walter and Harriet J. GillettCompiled by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre

The most comprehensive compilation of data on threatened vascular plants ever published. It includes the names of some 33,000 plant species determined to be rare or threatened on a global scale. Conservation assessments were provided by the IUCN Species Survival Commission, the National Botanical Institute (South Africa), Environment Australia, and CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew together with hundreds of botanic gardens and botanists throughout the world. The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the New York Botanical Garden have made major in-kind contributions. The result of 20 years work by botanists and conservationists around the world, it provides baseline information to measure conservation progress and is a primary source of data on plant species. Most importantly, however, it provides the building blocks on which to base a worldwide effort to conserve plant species.

Guidelines for Using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, March 2004
Compiled by the IUCN Red List Standards and Petitions Subcommittee

During the review process to finalize the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria version 3.1, it became clear that not all the issues concerning the use and application of the system could be covered in the booklet containing the rule set (see above). It was agreed that these issues would be covered in more depth through a set of user guidelines. In addition, during the review process a number of tricky and unresolved issues were also identified. Since the completion of the review, many of these issues have become the focus of active research programmes and emerging results and publications are now providing us with reasonable approaches and solutions. A Red List Standards and Petitions Subcommittee was formed by the IUCN Red List Committee to compile a comprehensive set of user guidelines, drawing on issues identified during the review process, the experience gained from SSC Specialist Groups in applying the system to different taxonomic groups, and incorporating the new emerging approaches and solutions. The guidelines are a living document that will be updated periodically, and help ensure that the system of Red List Categories and Criteria remains stable while providing solutions to any difficult issues that may arise in the application of the criteria to a wide variety of different taxonomic groups.

The updated Guidelines for Using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria are available at www.iucn.org/themes/ssc/redlists/RedListGuidelines.pdf

IUCN Red List Categories
Prepared by the IUCN Species Survival Commission

The threatened species categories used in Red Data Books and Red Lists have been in place for almost 30 years. The Red Data Book categories provide an easily and widely understood method for highlighting those species under higher extinction risk, so as to focus attention on conservation measures designed to protect them. This document, incorporating changes recommended by IUCN members, was adopted by the IUCN Council in 1994.

IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, Version 3.1
Prepared by the IUCN Species Survival Commission

The threatened species categories used in Red Data Books and Red Lists have been in place for almost 30 years. The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria provide an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction, so as to focus attention on conservation measures designed to protect them. This latest version of the classification system was adopted by the IUCN Council in February 2001 and reflects comments from the IUCN and SSC memberships and the final meeting of the Criteria Review Working Group.

An Overview of the Threatened Herpetofauna of South Asia
Edited by Channa N.B. Bambaradeniya and Vidhisha N. Samarasekara

The South Asian region can be considered a herpetofaunal 'hotspot' with its high degree of species richness and diversity of amphibian and reptilian fauna. Unfortunately, high population density and population growth are putting enormous pressure on the region's natural resources and ecosystems, and as a result five amphibian species and 31 reptilian species from this region are listed as globally threatened in the 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The selection of papers presented here, from the 4th World Herpetological Congress held in Sri Lanka in December 2001, hopes to draw attention to the status and trends of South Asian Herpetofauna and help policy makers, conservationists and herpetologists in the region take the appropriate steps to conserve these unique and important animals.

The Red Book: the Extinction Crisis
Face to Face
Amie Bräutigam and Martin Jenkins

Drawing on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the world's most objective and authoritative inventory of species at risk of extinction, this publication combines awe-inspiring imagery with solid science and factual accounts. The result of a collaboration between industry and science, this dramatic new work conveys to the general public the urgency and scale of the current extinction crisis. It describes the extinction process, its causes, and the measures needed to reverse it in terms accessible to everyone. More than simply raising awareness, this book is a call for action to all sectors of society from industry to governments to educators, to work together to save biological diversity. Conserving this diversity is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind today and we hope this book will help inspire more people to take up that challenge.

Southern African Plant Red Data Lists
Edited by Janice S. Golding

This hardcover, full-colour book presents plant Red Data Lists for ten southern African countries – Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. About 4,100 plant and tree species for this vast region are classified into various categories of extinction risk according to the internationally used principles laid down by IUCN. Measures for coping with species losses need to be dealt with at social, economic and political levels. Until the notions of threatened plants and threatened ecosystems become firmly entrenched within developmental agendas, efforts at retaining species for economies and the benefit of future generations will yield little. To this end, this publication serves as both a technical and a political document – it offers a practical conservation dimension that can be integrated into more sustainable socio-economic agendas for the southern African region.

A shocking 1,186 bird species risk becoming extinct in the next 100 years. Even worse, 182 of these are Critically Endangered - meaning they could be extinct in just 10 years. Which birds are threatened? What do they look like? Where are they found? Why are they threatened? What needs to be done? Threatened Birds of the World provides all the answers.

Species accounts, for each of the 1,186 globally threatened bird species, include: a location map - a colour illustration - notes on identification - conservation status - up-to-date knowledge on population size, range and trend - notes on habitat, diet and breeding ecology - main threats - present and past conservation efforts - conservation targets. Other information is provided on a further 727 Near Threatened species - the extinction crisis - the use of birds as indicators of biodiversity and in ecosystem conservation. Global analyses show where threatened birds occur, principal habitats, key issues to tackle and conservation action targets.
