IUCN’s Regional office for West and Central Africa (PACO) works mainly in the following countries:
The region
Projects focus on better management of World Heritage Sites, capacity-building and climate initiatives to strengthen the region’s resilience to disasters.
Main threats include:
- Poaching
- Extractive industries (oil and gas and mining)
- Habitat destruction.
Many affected species include large mammals such as lions and elephants; the absence of proper monitoring over the years mean that important data on these species is often absent.
IUCN has developed an environmental education programme which is integrated into school curricula and has also helped promote a network of environmental education professionals. Mechanisms for transboundary management of natural resources between west and central Africa have also been put in place. Much of central and west Africa need sustainable financing, capacity building for managers, and a solid strategy for involving local communities in natural resource management.
