Tue 7th Oct, 12.00-13:00

The day was Africa Day at the Water Pavilion. Mr. Kwame Odame-Ababio, PAGEV Coordinator, made a presentation titled “Options for increasing stakeholders’ participation in transboundary waters management”. Participants were briefed on the activities of the Volta Water Governance Project being implemented in West Africa. The Project Coordinator illustrated 3 options that have been initiated to facilitate multi-level participation in White Volta sub-basin, including:

  1. How the project has set the impulse for collaboration and building trust between Burkina Faso and Ghana through:

-            compilation and sharing of information on water availability and demand, production of maps to monitor landuse changes, and supporting the joint water quality monitoring by institutions from the two countries,

-         Initiation of innovative co-ordination arrangements on transboundary water management and the formulation of a Code of Conduct;

  1. How river banks restoration (re-forestation) has been used as an IWRM tool to mobilize stakeholders from the community, national and transboundary levels for the management of shared water resources;

  2. Further illustrated how the incorporation of livelihood benefits in IWRM could encourage communities to be partners in ecosystems restoration.
