Each SG is made up of experts who voluntarily work together to assess threats and levels of exploitation for species covered by their group. Taken together, these threats are then evaluated based on a well-established set of criteria to create IUCN species assessments. Assessments appear in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species which is updated annually. The SGs also develop Action Plans and initiate activities to increase awareness of and reduce risks to threatened species.
