Mammal Projects & Initiatives
Mammals on the IUCN Red List
Included in the IUCN Red List is the comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of the world's 5,499 mammal species. Here you will find global summary statistics for the assessment, as well as individual species accounts including IUCN Red List threat category, range map, ecology information, and other data for every mammal species.
SOS - Save Our Species
Save Our Species (SOS) is a global coalition initiated by the 3 founding partners IUCN, GEF and World Bank to build the biggest species conservation fund, supporting on-the-ground field conservation projects all over the world.
SOS will combine resources and funding experience from the World Bank and GEF (Global Environment Facility), the authoritative science of IUCN and the resources and ingenuity of the private sector to create a mechanism that ensures sufficient funding goes to species conservation projects where and when it will have the most impact.
Mammals currently being supported by SOS include the Pygmy Hippo and the Bactrian Camel.
Sir Peter Scott Fund Projects
The Sir Peter Scott Fund provides small-scale funding to on-the-ground conservation projects, all of which are undertaken by IUCN SSC members.
The Fund is managed by the IUCN Species Programme on behalf of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) and its partners, and all Sir Peter Scott Fund projects are endorsed by the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Specialist Groups.
Examples of Sir Peter Scott Fund projects focusing on mammals include:
- Ear-notching and micro-chipping of White Rhino, South Africa
- Leopard conservation in Pakistan
- Status of the Northern Chinese Argali
