The Maldivian tourism industry is highly dependent on the pristine nature of the marine environment. Staff at every resort need be well informed about the marine environment to communicate this appreciation to the guests. At present, most resort staff are somewhat aware of marine environmental issues but not sufficiently to ensure proper conservation and management of these threatened systems.

This component focusses on educating resort staff and inhabited islands on different aspects of the marine environment and specifically on environmental sustainability and conservation. Regional and Atoll Workshops are held at willing and interested resorts to improve awareness on climate change and its ecological and social impacts, house reef management, waste management, conservation of species and other related topics. Emphasis is placed on methods to reduce or avoid negative impacts of the resorts and island communities on the marine environment and ways to communicate these aspects to the guests.
