The best sailors and the fastest boats in the world are teaming up with Global Marine and Polar Programme to protect the oceans. “The America’s Cup is not an NGO dedicated to maintaining ocean health but can serve as a communication platform for key ocean messages. We want to give a voice to NGOs that are already doing great work on ocean conservation”, said Neill Duffy, of America’s Cup Event Authority.
As a significant number of America’s Cup races are located on or close to marine protected areas, which harbour important biodiversity, the Healthy Ocean Project aims to raise awareness and educate race goers on the issues our oceans face. “The oceans are in trouble. This is an opportunity to help the oceans and give something back”, underlined Carl Gustaf Lundin, Director of IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme.
