Listening, talking and working together to manage Ghana’s forests
Multi-stakeholder dialogues, or MSDs, are a useful way of bringing together different interest groups towards the common goal of sustainable management and conservation of natural resources. When IUCN first started working to reduce illegal logging in Ghana in 2005, it realized that none of the groups concerned were speaking to each other. IUCN brought the government, civil society, the private sector and the forest communities to the same table for the first time and has been having success ever since, in reducing conflicts, enabling sustainable natural resource management and improving local livelihoods in Ghanaian forested landscapes. Care in the community - saving Kenya's forests
Forests cover less than 3% of Kenya’s land area but they’re an important source of income, food and economic growth to the country. However, forests are increasingly under pressure, due to rampant charcoal burning, illegal logging, overgrazing, forest fires and pollution. The Kijabe Environment Volunteers group (KENVO) has made great moves in preserving vast areas of the Gatamaiyu forest near Nairobi, working with local communities, many of whom were previously involved in illegal and destructive activities in the forest. …

Conservation challenges in Eastern and Southern Africa
A lack of technical know-how and limited funding are some of the problems faced by IUCN and its members in Eastern and Southern Africa, where work is continuing to focus on the region's drylands, forests, inland waterways, coastal and marine environments. Hastings Chikoko, Head of IUCN South Africa and Head of Constituency Support and Communications for Eastern and Southern Africa, has been attending talks in Nairobi which will affect the Convention on Biological Diversity. He says that getting across the message that conservation and development can work alongside each other is key to work in the region.
