Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD)

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is an approach to achieving reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions that is currently under negotiation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). REDD+ includes the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries. A REDD+ mechanism with robust environmental and social safeguards could offer an effective climate abatement strategy, provided it is linked to a post-2012 climate agreement with strong binding CO2 emission reduction targets for industrialized nations.

Multi-stakeholder dialogues in IUCN's work on forest governance

IUCN supports multi-stakeholder dialogue (MSD) in forest governance reform as a means, first, to widen the source of knowledge and ideas for tackling a problem, and second, to build the support and capacity for collective action needed to implement reforms effectively. Dialogue is also valuable in itself, particularly if it gives a voice to vulnerable or marginalised social groups often excluded from policy and decision making. …

REDD in Vietnam: issues, opportunities, and linkages

Forest loss and degradation are responsible for about one-sixth of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than the entire transport sector. It is not only a major contributor to global warming but there is evidence that it’s possible to put a price on standing forest that makes conservation the economically rationale land use. In technical terms, there are large areas of forest where the price-elasticity of supply is high, meaning that decisions about whether to keep or clear forest are highly responsive to its price. …   | Vietnamese
