Allanblackia - a public-private partnership
The rainforests of West, Central and Eastern Africa are the source of a new commodity hoped to bring economic growth and biodiversity benefits to the people in this region.
For the first time, an edible oil from the seeds of the indigenous 'Allanblackia tree' will be extracted to produce commercial products sold throughout the world.
A unique public-private partnership has been formed to manage this process including local communities, non-governmental organisations, donor agencies and a private company. Together they will ensure that product development, from harvesting to market, takes place in an equitable and sustainable manner.
For IUCN the project offers a unique opportunity to promote a socially acceptable and environmentally sound market-based financing mechanism that contributes to safeguarding both local livelihoods and biodiversity in the tropical forest belt of Africa.
