The Sahelian landscapes - Mali, Burkina Faso

Our work in Mali

Livelihoods and Landscapes will bring add value to ongoing actions by local communities and partners by:

  • Updating and implementing the Management Plan of the forest of Kelka, for the restoration and exploitation of the resources of the forest landscape in collaboration with border communities
  • Promoting, at the Commune level, community management of natural resources by locally negotiated agreements
  • Supporting local governance, capacity building for communities in terms of organization (creation of consultation frameworks), conflict negotiation and training for a sustainable use of natural resources
  • Supporting the development of income generating activities mainly based on the valuation of ecosystem services (ecotourism), and forest products (wood and non timber forest products), organizing market channels and processing of products to better contribute to poverty reduction
  • Supporting the implementation of forest laws and regulations, as well as the local conventions that will be elaborated
  • Monitoring, evaluating and capitalizing the lessons learned for dissemination and contributing to decision making processes at the political level.

Our work in Burkina Faso

In Burkina Faso, in collaboration with the Government of Burkina Faso, Livelihoods and Landscapes will undertake needs assessments in selected newly established communes to ascertain the level of understanding of existing rights and entitlements to forest resources among local communities, district forest departments and local municipal councils, and of how this understanding translates into practical forest management arrangements within the area of intervention. Particular attention would be given to gender and equity considerations regarding how forest-derived resources are used and the value accrued locally, regionally and/or nationally
