Busy day at Forest Forum - Thursday 3 February
It was another busy day at the 9th UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), according to IUCN's José-Arturo Santos. Today a meeting was held between the World Future Council, IUCN and others. Discussions were centred around an award for innovation in forest law. …

Record day for forests - Wednesday 2 February
Today has been a special day for Forests and for me personally, says John D. Liu, Director of the Environmental Education Media Project and a Senior Research Fellow with IUCN. The launch of the International Year of Forests (IYF – 2011) at the 9th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) marks the strongest political statement ever made to recognize the importance of forests to the natural ecology of the Earth and the health and sustainability of human beings. …

Forests for people - Tuesday 1 February
Yesterday and today two working groups have been in closed session, says Gill Shepherd, IUCN consultant speaking at that 9th UN Forest Forum in New York. We lesser mortals are keeping a weather eye out of the windows. Last week’s snow drifts are still piled high at the sides of the streets and there is more snow promised for tonight and for the end of the week. We worry about colleagues who are not here yet, and in some ways tropical forests seem a world away. …

Forest finance - Monday 31 January
This morning dawned bright and sunny on the start of the second week of the Ninth United Nations Forest Forum, says IUCN consultant Lucy Emerton. Over the course of the day, a round of consultations and debates have brought the delegates one step closer to finalising the various resolutions and decisions that will hopefully come out of the session. As of the middle of the afternoon, the skies however remain for the most part clear – with some positive indications of progress on the elements that IUCN has been championing. …
