Sheila Abed appointed new Minister of Justice and Labor of Paraguay

Sheila Abed, founder of IUCN Member Instituto de Derecho y Economía Ambiental (IDEA) and former Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL), has been appointed as the Minister of Justice and Labor of the Republic of Paraguay. The inauguration and swearing-in of the new President, Horacio Cartes, and his cabinet, took place on 15 August 2013 in Asunción.
Sheila has built an impressive career. She founded IDEA, which is one of the most highly regarded civil society organizations in Paraguay, and recognized throughout Latin America.
IDEA plays an important role in the realm of environmental policy and legislation, as well as access to information, participation, and justice in Paraguay and the rest of the region.
Not long after founding IDEA, Sheila’s career turned to the global sphere. She was elected Chair of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law, a position she held for two consecutive terms, and was recently appointed as UNEP Special Envoy on Environmental Justice.
