The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is expected to be fully established in two plenary sessions. Based on the work achieved at the first session, the second session, currently being held in Panama, will determine the design of IPBES and focus on its work programme.

To prepare for the second session, governments and other stakeholders were invited to submit their:

IUCN has collated the suggestions from its network and has submitted the consolidated response to the IPBES Secretariat (UNEP). 

Due to its long experience on science, knowledge and policy tools on biodiversity and ecosystem services, and its nature as a multi-stakeholder union, IUCN has a lot to offer to IPBES. Having contributed to the negotiation process for the establishment of IPBES since 2008, IUCN is ready, willing, and able to support the work and governance of IPBES.

Among other aspects, on the first session IUCN urged governments and other relevant stakeholders to provide the platform with a strong set of working rules and called for civil society involvement in IPBES.
