Desertification is one of the greatest environmental challenges globally given the increased levels of poverty in the world's drylands. This project is therefore a response to to the need for a new drylands development paradigm for the delivery of the Millenium Development Goals, the UNCCD, the CBD programme of work on drylands and the national poverty reduction strategies.
This project aims to address desertification and alleviate poverty through a holistic approach based on the wider landscape and the needs of the people. Being implemented in four countries (Mali, Sudan, Jordan and Botswana), this project seeks to restore and sustainably manage key dryland ecosystem services in a participatory manner and based on the needs of the rural population; improve land tenure rights of the local population through dialogue and to assist communities create wealth through the development of markets for sustainable natural resource based products.
