Learning tools

As part of the “Business skills transfer programme for ecotourism development”, learning tools have been developed to support the conservation community to develop successful ecotourism products and services:

Integrating Business Skills into Ecotourism Operations: A “How to” Guide for the design and implementation of a training workshop

The “How to” guide provides an overview of the key steps to follow in organising and running a training workshop on business skills for ecotourism development in any given country or region. The guide goes through the different phases of development from design to planning to conducting the training. In doing this, it provides advice on selecting the geographical scope, determining the budget, designing the agenda as well as choosing who to invite as participants and instructors. The guide also directs readers to useful tools and resources.

Textbook on integrating business skills into ecotourism operations

The textbook is designed to help conservation organisations, community-based organisations and protected area managers plan and run effective ecotourism businesses. It is divided into six sections: Understanding your Market and Product, Developing a Sustainable Business Plan, Running Sustainable Operations, Marketing and Sales, Human Resources, and Health and Safety. Each of the sections includes a discussion of why that particular topic is important, what it means, and how it applies to ecotourism businesses. Each section also includes case studies, checklists and revision questions. At the end of the book, there is a list of resources that may be useful in developing your ecotourism business.

Materials from previous workshops

In organising 4 workshops from 2008 to 2012, many materials were produced which in themselves serve as learning tools and can also be adapted to suit individual purposes:
