In response to high oil prices and the need for climate change mitigation, many renewable energy technologies are being promoted, such as solar, wind, geothermal and wave. While they may initially seem sustainable, when developed on a large-scale, they have similar resource impacts as other energy options linked to the large areas of land or water they occupy.

In order to ensure that renewable energy is favoured over other less desirable forms of energy, such as “clean” coal and nuclear, IUCN will work to ensure that the risks are first fully understood, and secondly, that adequate legal and financial safeguards are in place to ensure that renewables deliver on their promise of providing sustainable and equitable energy.
