Under the general collaboration work programme of the IUCN-Rio Tinto agreement, IUCN and Rio Tinto are contributing their knowledge and expertise to specific activities and projects of each organization.

Activities:

  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
IUCN and Rio Tinto collaboratively engaged in the 10th CBD Conference of the Parties (COP) held in Nagoya, Japan, in 2010 to communicate the role of the private sector in delivering post-2010 CBD biodiversity targets.

  • Rio Tinto Biodiversity Steering Committee
IUCN participates in the Rio Tinto Biodiversity Implementation Team, which provides technical and strategic biodiversity advice to Rio Tinto staff.

  • Simandou (Guinea) Biodiversity Advisory Group
The Rio Tinto Relationship Manager at IUCN is a member of this group, and attended a Simandou Biodiversity Workshop in February 2011 to discuss, along with other environmental partners, Rio Tinto’s biodiversity work at its Simandou iron ore mining project in south-eastern Guinea. This included review and discussion of the Simandou Environment Baseline Report, Biodiversity Values Assessment, Critical Habitat Assessment, and preliminary offsets analysis.

Work plan objective: Foster mutual collaboration between IUCN and Rio Tinto, drawing explicitly on each organization’s specialist skill sets, experience and networks.
