IUCN West Asia Regional Advisory Committee
About IUCN West Asia Regional Advisory Committee (RAC)
During the 6th Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) which was held between 22-25 May 2007 in Tehran Iran, members have agreed on the initiation of a West Asia Regional Advisory Committee and they have elected Prof. Abdul Aziz Abu Zinada to Chair this committee.
The Committee held its first meeting on May 13, 2008 and was hosted by IUCN West Asia/Middle East (WAME) Regional Office in Amman - Jordan.
The RAC Chair, Prof Abdul Aziz Abu Zinada said that this committee will provide support to he implementation of IUCN WAME programmes and projects in the region, bringing new concepts and ideas to provide leadership in this changing world.
The committee came out with impotant recommendations; among them was calling for adopting Arabic language as an official IUCN language. The members also called for changing the IUCN West Asia/Middle East Regional Office name to be Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) as using "Middle East" might create confusion concerning the countries that are part of this region.
