Addressing National Targets and Plans for Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has aimed at supporting different parties in addressing national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration.
The CBD meeting launched on the 1st February 2014 in Amman, Jordan has pushed for capacity building in West Asia and North Africa on ecosystem conservation and restoration to support Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature, Regional Office for West Asia (IUCN ROWA) joined the five day effort and discussed with different parties the Aichi Biodiversity framework Targets no. 5, 11 and 15, which set quantitative global targets to reduce the loss of natural habitats, improve protected area networks and restore degraded areas.
Target 5 calls for the rate of loss of natural habitats to be at least halved; Target 11 calls for the protection of at least 17 per cent of terrestrial and inland waters and 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas; and Target 15 calls for the restoration of at least 15 per cent of degraded ecosystems.
The workshop worked on supporting parties in the development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration, the integration of these targets and plans into updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and mainstreaming them into broader national policies, plans and programmes. It furthermore pushed for the use of appropriate assessment, policy and planning tools to promote ecosystem conservation and restoration at appropriate levels.
The five day workshop was designed to increase the capacity of parties using an integrated participatory approach to promote holistic planning and implementation at landscape levels.
